RESOURCES FOR STUDIOS AND COLLABORATIVE SPACES

Songwriters, producers and musicians often work together in intimate settings in studios and other collaborative spaces. These kinds of settings offer opportunities for us to implement prevention measures and set up for safe and respectful relationships for all.

Whether you work for an organisation, or for yourself, if you work in a collaborative space you can play a part in setting up for safety by:

  1. having a policy to meet your legal requirements in preventing sexual harassment

  2. having a code of conduct which establishes clear expectations about how you and others will behave, and

  3. having some visual resources which help create a culture of respect and safety in the spaces that you work.

Along with this, consider whether there is any training and support you need to be able to prevent and respond to sexual harassment.

Take the opportunity to think about what you want your creative environments to be like, what healthy and respectful relating will look like in your work, and the standards you are going to uphold in your work relationships. Let people know that safety matters to you and that you are keen to have open conversations about how to ensure that everyone is able to bring their full creativity to a collaboration or working relationship. Small steps like putting a statement on the end of your email, or sending out your code of conduct at the start of a collaboration can help open the discussion and keep it on the table throughout the duration of your work together.

A code of conduct, or discussion about your policy, is a great way to start this conversation and let people know how they can raise it with you again if anything happens that makes them feel uncomfortable.
