Professional Respect Training
Professional Respect Training (PRT) is a full‑day workshop designed specifically for the Aotearoa music community, equipping participants with practical knowledge and tools to prevent and respond to sexual harm across real‑world music industry workplaces and community environments.
Delivered in a safe, supportive, and interactive setting by specialist facilitators, the training covers legal responsibilities, workplace practices, and applied skills from receiving disclosures to bystander intervention techniques.
About PRT
Our Professional Respect Training programme was developed by Sexual Harm Prevention Specialist Consultant Rachel Harrison with SoundCheck Aotearoa and piloted in 2021.
It builds on a model developed by Harrison with ScreenSafe and has been adapted specifically for the Aotearoa music community, reflecting the unique structures, roles, and working conditions across live events and touring, studio environments, and wider industry workplaces and community spaces.
Workshops are interactive and designed to support open, respectful participation across a diverse range of roles and experiences.
Who this training is for
This training is designed for the music community in all its diversity, including artists, managers, crew, venues, promoters, technicians, and industry professionals.
It is particularly relevant for those working in environments where roles, power dynamics, and working conditions may vary across projects, events, and collaborations.
For music educators, please see Safer Spaces in Music Education Aotearoa who run similar workshops for music education settings.
What you’ll learn
While centred around sexual harm prevention and response, the training also provides practical knowledge and tools relevant to bullying, non-sexual harassment, and discrimination in music workplaces and community environments.
Participants develop practical understanding and skills across key areas including:
Definitions of sexual harassment and sexual harm within New Zealand legislation
Legal responsibilities and WorkSafe obligations
Receiving disclosures and responding appropriately
Reporting pathways and available support services
Strategies to prevent sexual harm and build respectful workplace environments
Bystander intervention techniques
All content is contextualised for music settings, including live events, touring environments, studio work, and collaborative workplaces.
