Support SoundCheck Aotearoa and our SHAPRA Service

We’re on a mission to raise $50,000 to boost and strengthen our work. Your donation helps fund vital education, support, and resources that make the Aotearoa music community safer, more inclusive, and better equipped to prevent and respond to harm.

SoundCheck Aotearoa is a registered charitable trust dedicated to supporting our music community to build safer and more inclusive workplaces and community spaces across Aotearoa. Through free education, direct responsive support, resources, and advocacy, we work alongside and behind our music community to prevent and respond to sexual harm, bullying, harassment, and discrimination. We are grateful and humbled to support the work of community heroes doing this work in their workplaces and community spaces everyday.

Your donation helps make this work possible. The need for safer spaces in music has never been greater.

Since 2023, our Sexual Harm Prevention and Response Advisor (SHAPRA) service has supported more than 359 individual cases of music people seeking advice, guidance, and support to prevent or respond to harm.

Our SHAPRA service is a free, confidential, and independent service, ensuring our music community has access to trusted expertise when it matters most. It can be accessed anytime by people who have experienced harm, connected third-parties (friends, whānau, colleagues), businesses, organisations, and groups (including bands), and people who have been accused of / who have done harm.

As demand continues to grow and funding pressures increase, community support is essential to helping us continue this work

Your donation contributes to:

  • Safe specialist delivery of our SHAPRA service

  • Access to HR and Restorative Justice support when needed

  • Further development and delivery of education and harm prevention initiatives

  • Essential operating costs

Our SHAPRA service is helping create safer workplaces and community spaces for all of music.

“While it's not like this service has singlehandedly ended all abuse, the fact that it gives those harmed by it (along with those doing the harming) an avenue to process, seek help and get confidential support is incredibly important. It's a beautiful example of how we, as a community, can help each other. Not to mention it is the best use of public funding I've ever seen.”

“It’s incredibly important especially at this time when music industry leaders are seeking advice and guidance to bring them forward to both the challenges and the benefits of putting sexual harm reduction at the top of the priority list for infrastructure within all music venues and festival sites.”

“Our industry is full of entrenched toxic behaviours and many people can feel very alone. It is difficult for people to know how to deal with any issues in a professional and caring way. The support that SHAPRA offers brings safety, experience, and can help give clarity in situations that are highly charged and full potential to exacerbate harm. I respect their opinions and welcome their knowledge and support.”

“The SHAPRA service fills a gap and provides support and expertise that is not readily available elsewhere. There is also flexibility with the service the SHAPRA offers, it can be tailored to individual needs, and is not as restricted or prescribed as other services.”

“Support like this should be accessible to everyone and not just those who can afford it. It’s a vital service for the music industry which has far too many dark corners.”

“The SHAPRA service meets an enormous need in the music industry, creating a structural solution to those who have experienced harm in music industry spaces. It also serves as a structural deterrent in the industry to prevent harm.”

“The SHAPRA has a very specific skillset. They offer a safe environment to talk about very personal issues and trauma, they provide helpful insight into certain behaviours and patterns of thinking, and draw upon resources that can practically address issues, all while understanding the very specific environment of the NZ music industry.”
