RESOURCES FOR ARTISTS AND MUSIC MANAGERS

If you are an artist, musician, music manager, booking agent, or mentor that is in control of or has significant influence over a business, you will have a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act to manage the risks of sexual harassment within your sphere of control and influence.

There are many opportunities to implement prevention measures and set up for safe and respectful relationships in your work.  Whether you work for an organisation, or for yourself, you can play a role by:

  1. having a policy to meet your legal requirements in preventing sexual harassment

  2. having a code of conduct which establishes clear expectations about how you and others will behave

  3. using a health and safety briefing or having some visual resources which help create a culture of respect and safety in the spaces that you work.

  4. getting the training and support you need to be able to prevent and respond to sexual harassment

Take the opportunity to think about what you want your environments to be like, what healthy and respectful relating will look like in your work, and the standards you are going to uphold in your work relationships. Let people know that safety matters to you and that you are keen to have open conversations about how to ensure that everyone is able to bring their full creativity to collaborations and working relationships. Small steps like putting a statement on the end of your email, or sending out your code of conduct at the start of a working relationship can help open the discussion and keep it on the table throughout the duration of your work together.

Please note, if you are working with anyone under the age of 18, make sure you also have a child protection policy to clearly identify how you will ensure their safety while you are working together.
